Mahatma Gandhi was popularly known as Bapu or The father of the Nation. He was responsible for the freedom of the country. He was a firm believer in non-violence and has his footprints on the sand of time. He died like Jesus Christ and Guru Teg Bahadur for the freedom of the country.
The full name of Mahatma Gandhi was Mohan Das Karam Chand Gandhi. He was born on October 2, 1869, at Porbandar in Kathiawar. His father was the Dewan of Rajkot and Bikaner. His mother was a pious lady.
Gandhi had his education in India and in England. He was married to Kasturba at the early age of thirteen. He passed and there he was called to the bar. On return to India, he failed to be a successful lawyer because of his extreme devotion to truthfulness, while the profession of law thrives entirely on lying and cheating.
In 1893 Gandhiji went to South Africa as a lawyer to a rich merchant but soon he turned to politics to help the Indians who were leading a miserable life. In 1894 he founded the Natal Congress to defend the Indians in South Africa.
In 1913 Gandhiji returned to India and plugged himself in the struggle for independence. He led four Civil Disobedience Movements and was imprisoned by the British several times. In 1942, he led the Quit India Movement which led to freedom in 1947.
